A Day in Denmark
After a last minute decision, we ended up with a full day to explore the lovely city of Copenhagen. As we established in our last post, Scandinavian countries are clean, cold, and very expensive. Denmark was no exception, but decided to add WET to the mix! We arrived bright and early and made our way to central station to find a spot to store our luggage. After some food and coffee, it was time to venture into the rain.
We didn't exactly have an agenda for the day, which was part of the fun. We wandered the cobblestone streets through shops and restaurants, took in the views from the top of an old building, and took photos in front of Copenhagen's iconic Nyhavn (the colorful building-lined canal).
We made our way to Freetown Christiania, a car-free, self-governing, hippie-filled society within Copenhagen. Christiania is a very unique area with cannabis shops, endless graffiti, stray cats, and interesting characters.
Next on our list: danishes! You can't spend 12 hours in Denmark without stuffing yourself with as many danishes as possible. We found a cute cafe and did just that!
Our day in Denmark was coming to an end which meant it was time to head back to Oslo to catch our flight home. We grabbed our luggage and made our way to the ferry terminal. We really enjoyed the overnight ferry. Our private cabin had two sets of bunk beds and a bathroom, and was reasonably priced. There are restaurants and duty-free shops on board, even a karaoke bar and night club on weekends.
We arrived in Oslo the next morning. Within 24 hours, we had decided we wanted to go to Denmark, bought plane tickets to Denmark, arrived in Denmark, explored Denmark, and departed Denmark by boat. One thing we have learned is to accept that you will never see everything. Even though we were only there for short time, we were able to experience a bit of what Denmark has to offer which was well worth the detour.
Farvel, Denmark. Until next time.
